REVIEWS
Sometimes, choosing an art book or DVD is really
difficult as you don't really know what you are getting until you get
it home. So many times I have been seduced by gorgeous photos and
advertising blurb, only to be disappointed when my latest purchase
didn't live up its promise. These are my personal recommendations: I
own and love them all. I have given brief descriptions
of the contents on this page, plus a link to each individual book for
an in-depth review, so you can judge for yourself if you want them too - I
hope it helps!

CELEBRATE YOUR CREATIVE
SELF
MARY TODD BEAM |
|
|
With 25 separate exercises, each
chapter leads you into a new technique which is clearly explained,
with photographs of stepped How To's as well as finished pieces -
by herself and other artists, so that you can see each technique
from a different point of view. Although Mary is essentially a
Fine Artist, this book would also serve well for anyone interested
in other branches of arts and crafts, particularly collage, mixed
media and journaling to calligraphers, altered book artists,
embroiderers and
quilters. Techniques cover watercolours, acrylics, and items you
may never have thought of (eg: shelf liner, aluminium foil);
resist (in a way I hadn't seen before) and creating surface
texture; using personal symbolism in your art, and how to find
your own personal voice. True eye candy from a
deservedly highly successful artist, who not only talks the talk
but walks the walk. Highly recommended.

PRETTY LITTLE THINGS
SALLY JEAN ALEXANDER |
|
|
Oooh, I love, love, LOVE this book! This lady has immaculate
taste. I want her studio, I want her stuff, I want her life!
Whether you love altered art, collage or want to make wonderful
jewellery from vintage crystals, glass slides etc, this is the
lady for you.
Sally Jean has the most immaculately soldered charms I have
seen anywhere - and even solders stained glass collage pieces into
hanging wall vases and miniature luminaire houses!

THE ARTFUL CARD
ALISON EADES |
|
|
We all need cards at some time or
another, so I was delighted to discover this book, with well
planned & stepped-out projects, very clearly explained, and with full
colour photographs throughout, Alison has a style all her own: a
little bit collage-y, a little bit scrapbook-y, with projects
ranging from cards to full-size framed pieces. Cards are themed to
the recipients: Retail Therapy
is retro, girly pink and charming. A Lifetime of Chocolate
is a hanging card; Cake is a shadow box.
Materials used are eclectic, and Alison shows how to age and distress these
using a variety of techniques. Not
just collage: Alison also uses rubber stamps to achieve the effect
she is looking for. A very charming book altogether, with a very
fine judgement of colour and composition. Highly recommended -
especially for card makers wanting to stretch their wings, and scrapbookers wanting to get out of the album!
