COPTIC BOOKS
One of my favourite book forms, the covers are treated
as a separate unit (cut from greyboard or chipboard, then covered with
decorative papers or fabric both inside and out) and assembled as a
whole when the book is sewn. The stitching appears on the outside of
the spine.
Part of the joy of creation is seeing them take on
their own personalities as I sew them. Choose what size you want, cut
the boards - then choose and cut the papers. Finally, sew everything
together. At every single stage you choose what you want to achieve
the result you need. These books can be made exactly how you like them
- I make tiny ones (7.5cm x 5.5cm) and the largest one ever was
coffee-table sized: 2ft x 3ft (I could just get my arm inside to
stitch it!).

The group of coptics below shows they can be any size,
shape or paper. The large book is A4 with laminated handmade papers on
the cover boards. The inner pages are watercolour papers. The small
square book is a heavyweight cartridge paper and constructed with
pockets (I will take some more photos and put them up this week -
promise!) The white book (A5) is handmade rose petal paper, with green
Khadi pages inside.
